What would TV teachers actually earn today?
Most "TV teacher salary" pieces guess. We did something narrower and checkable: we took the school district each show is set in, opened that district's official salary schedule, and placed each character on it. Every figure below links to the document it came from, and the full transcription is free to reuse.
Key findings
- Walter White would make $71,906 in Albuquerque today, 64.5% more than the $43,700 he cites on screen. After inflation, that is only about 6.8% more in real terms ($43,700 in September 2008 ≈ $67,301 in September 2026 dollars, BLS CPI-U).
- Experience barely moves pay in Albuquerque. On the 2026-27 Level 2 master's lane, step 1 pays $71,906 and step 40 pays $71,945: thirty-nine steps are worth $39. Pay in New Mexico rises mainly by moving up a licensure level, not by years served. Level 3 starts at $82,894.
- The same career stage pays very differently by district. A master's-degree teacher starting out earns $46,694 in Lima, Ohio (Glee), $57,411 in Philadelphia (Abbott Elementary), $71,906 in Albuquerque at Level 2 and $80,166 in New York City (Welcome Back, Kotter).
- Barbara Howard's ceiling is $110,720, the 2025-26 Philadelphia senior-career rate. On the regular schedule a veteran tops out at $94,011 with a master's.

Walter White, then and now
In "Bit by a Dead Bee" (Season 2, Episode 3, aired March 2009), Walt tells a psychiatrist: "When I can work, I make $43,700 per year." That fits New Mexico's three-tier system of the time. State law set minimums of $40,000 for Level 2 and $50,000 for Level 3-A from 2007-08 (NMSA 22-10A-11, 2006 text; LFC evaluation, 2007). $43,700 sits between the two, so we place him on Level 2. The show never states his license level or degree lane.

Note: in the 2026-27 APS matrices, cells above step 43 jump irregularly (for example, Level 2 MA step 52 is $87,526). We report steps 1 to 40, where the pattern is a uniform $1 per step, and include every cell in the dataset.
Method
- District: the public school district covering the city each show is set in. Fictional schools (J.P. Wynne High, Willard R. Abbott Elementary, William McKinley High, James Buchanan High) are treated as ordinary district schools. Abbott is a district school in the show.
- Schedule: the most recent official schedule we could retrieve on October 29, 2026. That is 2026-27 for Albuquerque and New York City. For Philadelphia and Lima it is 2025-26: Philadelphia's contract adds 3% on September 1, 2026, and Lima's agreement ran through June 30, 2026. We did not compute any unpublished figures.
- Placement: characters' degrees and years of service are rarely stated, so we show the cell matching their apparent career stage plus an alternative. We never interpolate between steps.
- Exclusions: base salary only. Stipends (Glee club, coaching), bonuses and benefits are excluded.
- Inflation: BLS CPI-U, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted (series CUUR0000SA0).
