The state floor is far lower than what big districts pay: TEA's 2025-26 minimum is $33,960 for a new teacher, while all ten of the largest districts start certified teachers between about $58,000 (Austin) and $70,000 (Houston) for 2026-27. Houston and Dallas now pay largely by performance rating, with top levels of $92,000 to $103,000, while the other eight use experience-based schedules topping out between about $74,000 and $89,000 before state retention allotments.
