Teacher Salary Schedule Explained: Steps and Lanes
Published

A teacher salary schedule is a grid that sets pay by experience step and education lane; in Virginia, Fairfax County Public Schools lists $63,599 at step 1 in the bachelor's lane for 2026-27.
Your pay falls at the point where your step and lane meet. District rules determine how you qualify for each one, so check the schedule notes along with the grid.
Key Takeaways
- Your step reflects the district's rules for credited service or placement.
- Your lane reflects the education level and credits the district recognizes.
- The salary shown applies to a specific schedule and work calendar.
Find your place on the salary grid
- Match the scheduleConfirm the school year, employee group and work calendar.
- Find your columnUse the lane for your approved degree and credits.
- Find your rowUse the step assigned under district placement rules.
- Read the intersectionYour row and column meet at the salary for that placement.
What Does a Teacher Salary Schedule Show?
A teacher salary schedule shows the salary assigned to each combination of step and education lane for a specific school year. The step runs down the rows, and the lane runs across the columns.
A schedule may show a base salary and include notes about the work calendar, who qualifies, or extra pay. Check its title and notes before comparing amounts, since schedules can cover different job groups or work years.
You may also see the terms teacher pay scale and teacher salary scale. To compare starting pay by state, use the teacher starting salary by state guide.
How Do Steps Reflect Years of Service?
A step marks a salary placement tied to credited service or another district placement rule. In a common step grid, the row number rises as you gain credited years, though each district sets its own rules.
When you change districts, ask how the new employer credits your prior teaching experience. A schedule may have a step for each service year, but the district's placement rules determine where you enter.
Read the schedule notes for details about movement and eligibility. Check whether the schedule defines a step as a year of experience, a salary level, or another placement label.
How Do Education Lanes Affect Pay?
An education lane places you in a column based on the degree and approved credits the district recognizes. Common labels include bachelor's, master's, and doctorate, with some schedules adding credit-hour lanes between degrees.
A higher degree does not automatically place you in a higher lane. Check the district's rules for required credits, approved programs, and documentation, then compare the salary in the lane you qualify for.
Lane labels can differ across schedules. Denver Public Schools, for example, labels its master's column BA+36/MA, while Fairfax County Public Schools includes BA+15, BA+30, and MA+30 among its lanes.
How to Read a Schedule, Step by Step
To read a schedule, identify the right schedule, find your lane, find your step, and read across to the salary. Confirm the schedule's year and work terms before using the amount.
- Find the schedule that applies to you. Match the school year and employee group, then check any work-calendar notes.
- Find your lane. Use the district's rules to identify the column for your degree and credits.
- Find your step. Follow the district's rules for experience or placement to locate your row.
- Read across. The cell where your row meets your lane gives the salary shown for that placement.
If you are changing districts, ask how the district will credit your experience and education before estimating your salary. That answer determines which row and column to use.
Real Examples: Fairfax County, Cypress-Fairbanks, and Denver
The three schedules show how the same step-and-lane grid can use different labels and salary amounts. Find your lane, find your step, then read across to the salary for that placement.
The Fairfax County Public Schools grid in Virginia has 26 step rows for its 2026-27 standard teacher scale. Its full lane set includes BA, BA+15, BA+30, MA, MA+30, and PhD; the examples below show the BA, MA, and PhD lanes.
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in Texas shows a 2026-27 base salary by years of experience, with steps from 0 to 40. The master's and doctorate amounts include the stated stipend, and the base excludes allotments paid on top.
Denver Public Schools in Colorado uses a 2026-27 DCTA step-and-grade schedule for a 186-day year. Its master's column is the BA+36/MA lane, and the doctorate column is the Doctorate lane; intermediate lanes are not shown.

Schedules That Work Differently
Some districts set teacher pay through a structure that does not use the standard step-and-lane grid. Check the schedule's own notes to see how it assigns pay.
Houston ISD in Texas uses a 2026-27 Pay-for-Performance one-pager, with pay set by effectiveness level. The amounts are Unsatisfactory $64,000, Progressing I $70,000, Progressing II $74,000, Proficient I $80,000, Proficient II $86,000, and Exemplary I $92,000. Exemplary II is not used in 2025-26 or 2026-27. New hires with under 3 years start at Progressing I ($70,000).
Jordan School District in Utah uses one scale of levels 1-45, from $63,900 to $103,500, with $900 added per level. New hires are placed by education: bachelor's at level 1, B+20 at level 3, B+40 at level 5, and master's at level 6 ($68,400); M+30 is level 8.
Arlington Public Schools in Virginia labels its steps A-AE, numbered 1-31 on this site. The plan says steps do not equal years of experience. Its bachelor's, master's, and doctorate lanes are shown in the grid, and the bachelor's lane tops out at step Z ($102,274).
